Discover The Benefits of Maca

If you are looking for a natural way to increase your energy and stamina or to help improve your sexual function, you may want to consider maca.  Even though this root plant is not a part of the ginseng family, it is an herb also known as “Peruvian ginseng” because of its similar benefits.  It can be taken in a variety of ways, but it is most commonly found in a pill or as a liquid extract.  You can also find it in a powdered form.

Some research has shown that this herb may have certain benefits for your health when taken regularly.  This herb has long been thought to increase energy and stamina.  Preliminary findings from studies that have tested the herb on animals have indicated that it may indeed help to boost endurance and stamina.  However, there is not yet a lot of scientific support that backs up this claim.  More research is being done in order to substantiate this idea.

Maca’s ability to aid in improving the sexual function of both men and women has not been clearly defined.  A report that was published by an alternative medicine magazine in 2010 said that the evidence that this herb improves sexual function is limited.  Four different clinical trials were analyzed.  The results were split right down the middle.  Two studies found that the herb may have some positive effects for people with sexual dysfunction.  The trials also showed an increase in sexual desire in healthy women that are menopausal and in adult men who are healthy.  However, the other two studies seemed to point to the fact that the herb did not have any effect on sexual function.

It is interesting to note that in 2008 researchers studied 20 people who suffered from depression.  All of these participants were taking selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) to treat their depression.   They each reported experiencing sexual dysfunction, a common side effect that is associated with SSRIs.  The results of the study showed that maca may be able to help ease the sexual dysfunction caused by SSRIs as well as help to improve the libido.

Another area where this herb is thought to have a benefit is in postmenopausal women.  When 14 postmenopausal women were given the herb in a powdered form for six weeks, they reported a reduction in the amount of anxiety and depression they felt as opposed to how they felt during the six weeks when they were given a matching placebo.

If you find yourself suffering from lack of energy, stamina or libido, adding maca to your diet may be able to help.
