The Benefits Of Adding Cacao To Your Diet


Several years ago when the first studies were done that showed how adding a few ounces of dark chocolate to your food intake was actually good for you, there were a few people who just refused to believe that was true.  However, as time has passed and more studies have been done to show this to be an actual fact, more and more people try to make a regular intake of a small amount of dark chocolate a part of their lives.  The reason dark chocolate is so beneficial is because of the high amount of cacao incorporated into it.  And what has been shown over the ensuing years is that the more of the raw cocoa is present in the chocolate, the better it is for you.  


Since chocolate is so delicious and almost everyone loves it, scientists have not had to do a lot of convincing to get people to ingest more of it, but if you are interested in finding out what cacao does for you, here is some information you can enjoy as you chomp down on your next piece of health food.  

First of all, and what is most well-known by the average population, cacao is just packed with really great antioxidants.  There are a lot of antioxidant foods out there, but it really takes some “superfoods” to get the great benefit from them and cocoa happens to be one of those.  It has types of antioxidants that do not show up in other such antioxidant-rich foods and because you can consume a lot of it without too much suffering, it can definitely be a benefit to your overall health with no detrimental effects, especially if you consume the raw nibs or powder rather than processed chocolate bars.


There are also lots of other marvelous compounds in cacao such as theobromine, which is a mild stimulant with a mild diuretic effect.  This can help push toxins out of your body because you have to drink more water to compensate for its mild diuresis.  Keep in mind this is pretty mild so unless you are really eating a lot of chocolate, you likely will not notice it.  Another compound found in dark chocolate is phenylethylamine which is a mood enhancer and can really work as a mild antidepressant.  You always knew that eating chocolate made you feel better, right?  You were actually correct all along!


Dark chocolate even has the ability to make your brain produce more serotonin which is another mood enhancer and it can even help relieve the moody symptoms of PMS.  On top of that, the cocoa beans are loaded with a lot of essential minerals that you don’t always find in other foods like magnesium, iron, zinc, potassium, manganese, and copper.
